Private nephrology in Valencia
Kidney symptoms
The kidney warns late and quietly. These are the signs that most often bring a patient to a nephrology consultation, explained by Dr. Villaro with the reasoning he uses in clinic.
A symptom is not a diagnosis
Each of these signs has kidney causes and causes that have nothing to do with the kidney. Two simple tests usually separate them: a urine test, and blood work with creatinine and estimated filtration rate. What follows explains what a nephrologist looks for in each case. It does not replace a medical assessment.
Blood in Urine (Haematuria)
Visible, or found only on a dipstick, it always deserves an explanation. The source can be the kidney or the urinary tract, and each is found with different tests.
Foamy Urine
Fine, persistent foam that returns day after day usually means protein in the urine. It is the most common reason for a kidney referral, and the most commonly ignored.
Frequent Urination at Night (Nocturia)
Getting up twice or more each night, when it is a change from your usual pattern, can be one of the first signs the kidney has lost its ability to concentrate urine.
High Creatinine Level
A single value tells you little. What matters is the trend across several blood tests and the estimated filtration rate that comes with it.
Swollen Ankles and Legs
Swelling that pits under a finger and worsens through the day can come from the kidney, the heart or the liver. A urine test separates those causes quickly.
Already have a diagnosis?
